"Onsua Ta'an! Or welcome! You've come to learn the vital laws of survival in the world of Absathus! Believe me when I tell you, the last traveler that didn't listen... Let's say it wasn't his happy ending... *Shudders* Now then! Where we? Ah yes! The 'Laws of The Land'!...Like many ancient civilizations, crimes were often punishable by death. It was typically carried out to those who opposed the law. Some were made public to

make an example of, or reminder... While others could have been more agonizing...more lingering. Most often, theft was punishable by dismemberment... Below is list of crimes and their punishments. Some are grotesque and not for the feint of heart..."

                        ~Laws of Khet~

The laws of Khet were established during the first mortal dynasty of the Nazemi and made into law by the Narihu people. Over the ages the Laws of Khet have been reformed and expanded to maintain order among the chosen lands. The women of Khet held the same right of succession as the men...Such legal judgments pertaining to a family and rights of succession could be granted full rights under Khetian Law. Women owned and bequeathed property, filed lawsuits, and bore witness in court proceedings without the authority of their father or husband.

Even the working class had some rights and could own property.  Justice compelled  a hierarchy in Khetian Law, depending on the severity of the crime. The most heinous criminals could be judged only by the Empress or Emperor, often with the vizier conducting the investigation and turning to the reigning official for final judgment... In some cases, the Empress or Emperor appointed a special commission with full authority to pass judgment. Punishment for serious crimes included servitude and execution; mutilation and flogging were often used to punish lesser offenders... Here are a list of offenses both lesser and severe...

Common punishments:  Most could lead to imprisonment, fines, branding, dismemberment of fingers or hand, slavery and servitude...Even 100 strokes of the cane. Depending on such, 5 bleeding cuts could be added to the punishment.

Capital punishments: Were reserved for the most heinous crimes from murder, conspiracy, rape, treason, and even tomb raiding were especially heinous. The tomb and burial process were especially sacred in journey to the Nu'aat. Such a heinous act commonly resulted in public humiliation followed by death. The chosen death penalty was being burned alive. This denied him or her entrance into the Nu'aat due to religious crimes against the departed. Other religious crimes could lead to having one's tongue removed and mouth sewn shut followed by being buried alive. This was believed to prevent them from talking even in death.

Conspiracy:  Can lead to public mutilation, humiliation and execution by drowning or decapitation.

Adultery: Can lead to public humiliation by being stoned to death in the center of the town by the spouse and family. Males could even face castration. Women were typically stoned to death.

Murder: Murder was always carried out by execution and depending on the severity it could lead to a lingering and excruciating death. Murder of a religious figure could lead to being burned alive. Other methods can result in exile. This usually involved being given little to nothing to protect against the harsh sun and cold nights of the deserts. Typically resulted in severe burns, dehydration and followed by death.

Treason and prisoners of war: Punishments of treason and war can vary. Prisoners of war are often given the choice of an honorable death by suicide instead of public dishonor before execution. This was typically carried out in public. An honorable death often excused the prisoner's family from a lifetime of dishonor. Aside from religious crime, Treason resulted with some of the most unconventional methods...

Drawn and quartered lead to each of one's limbs being tied to a laboring creature or wagon and slowly pulled until their limbs are ripped from the body.

Drowning in a sack can be carried out by being just thrown into a body of water with or without a weight and stoned.

Even entertainment was used as a popular yet unconventional means of execution...The included...

Death by play... This is where the offender forced and expected to play the role of the criminal in a theatrical way. This performance was typically performed midday before the arena.

The Arena...Criminals and prisoners of war were thrown to the gladiators or wild beasts as entertainment...

Death by hide wrapping...Was the most gruesome and feared punishment ever to be implemented into Khetian Law...This involved in being bound and wrapped in wet rawhide and left to dry in the hot desert...As the rawhide would dry, it would tighten and slowly constrict the person...Eventually squeezing them alive until they died. Often their insides would be pushed from their orifices...
